How the USPS Works
Every day about seven billion people would send the snail mail. Every afternoon they will collect all the mails and the boxes. First step is to separate them. The boxes go one way. The flat envelopes go other way and thick envelopes go somewhere else. There is a special machine which can sieve the thick envelope out. The next step is to bar code them. Every envelope has their unique code. It is like the ID for the letter. Then the computer would read the front of the envelopes’ address. The computer can tell the zip code and classify the envelopes. Finally, the local mails go to the particular post office. The other mails go to the plane or some other places.
I usually send the mails by USPS; however I had never seen this working process in the post office. I admire the computer can classify the letter by the zip code. The computer can deal with millions mails. It is really amazing. When I saw amount of letters in the post factory, I knew that the automatic computer is really important. If the post offices just have the people to handle the mails, I would take much time to send the mails.

Week 6: Task 1 - Long Term Memory
The first video is a crazy guy introduced the long term memory. He said that long term memory is like a file in the computer. There are two types of long term memory: Procedural memory and Declarative memory. Procedural memory is the memory you doing something such as backing a cake. There are two parts of Procedural memory. First is episode which is like life. Second is Semantic memory that you learning at school and playing games.
The second video is a woman introduced that there are four ways to help long term retrieval. First, you have to repeat recite and review. She teaches “Mississippi” to two people. You have to listen and speak the spelling in order to remember the word. The second way of them is distributive practice. You can divide the word to memory. The third way is serial position effect. Finally, you have to find the similarities and differences. You can learn fast by using common word to help your memory.
I prefer the second video. I learn the long term memory due to the women introduced the detail. She talks the clear steps and ways. The last way she taught that make me feel amazing. I haven’t heard that way to memorize. I will try to do this in my studying.

Week 5: Task 2 - Second Chance
Topic: Second Chance
Summary:
Ibraheem Shahadat is a 17 years old teenager. He graduated from the New York Institute for Special Education. When he was 13, he lost his vision due to a special disease. However, he didn't give up his life. The teacher said that he is a really good student. He is curious about the science. Moreover, he plays the "global" very well. It is a team sport which everybody have to cover their eyes. They have to use the ears to play the sport. His dream is to be a math or physics teacher. He also wants to play the "global" in Olympic. Ibraheem likes to be blind now. He said that he is a man who is blind instead of the blind man. Moreover he appreciates that he not be able to see and he finds more in his life.
Opinion:
After watching the story, I felt very warm. I admire Ibraheem’s brave to see the disable in his life. He inspired my mind. I realized that I have to face and fix the problems in my life instead of escaping. There are a lot of hassles would happen. How many times did I complain? How many times did I overcome? How many times did I escape? We have to overcome the frustrations in our life like the man in the video. On the other hand, I appreciated that my parents gave me a lot. They gave me not only the intact body but the chance to study abroad. To sum up, I believe that Ibraheem would have the awesome live in the future!

Week 5: Task 1 - GAP Food Bank
Summary:
The "GAP Food Bank" is located on forty miles from LA. There are a lot of groceries which was people’s donation. It is a place help the people who have no money to buy the groceries. Due to the economic crisis, there are more and more family cannot afford their lives. There are more and more family came to food bank from pass few months. For example, the single mother had no budget to raise the children then she went to the food bank. Moreover, the gas price is more expensive. Some people cannot afford the gas fee to go to the food bank. The food bank was open at 4pm on Thursday; however the long line was started at noon. There are some volunteers. One of them always prayed with each family in order to help them overcome the economic problems. I saw a family. The Father lost his bank job so they went to the food bank in order to battle the lives. The Mother said that she still have family and home so that she did not give up. In the end, they were succeeding. Both of the parents got the job and they would not need to go to the food bank.
Opinion:
After watching this news, I had various thinking in my mind. First of all, I felt very warm that there are a lot of volunteers who help the poor. Some people used their time to support the poor people. Some people spent their money to help them. Next, I am so glad to see the family which just got help from the food bank instead if rely it. It is really important because they cannot count on the food bank for their whole life. They use the support to build the foundation for their lives. On the other hand, I thought there were some people who relied on the food bank. They lost their abilities to live and earn money. It is a serious problem. I learned a lot from this news. I saw the place that I had never seen. I felt that I can do more for the poor people. The most important thing is that I have to study hard in order to have the ability to live in the world.

Week 4: Task 2 - 3D movie "UP"
Summary:
I want to see a movie this weekend. The movie ''UP'' is produced by Disney. Carl is a 78 year-old man. Ellie is his wife who dies of old age. Carl living by himself, becoming sour and missing his wife terribly. As the years pass, the city grows around Carl's house with construction as he refuses to move. After a tussle with a construction worker over his broken mailbox, the court orders Carl to move into Shady Oaks Retirement Home. Carl comes up with a scheme to keep his promise to Ellie, and uses his old professional supplies to create a makeshift airship using 10,000 helium balloons which lift his house off its foundations. Russell is an eight-year-old boy. He attended the journey with Carl. They faced to many problems during the adventure. The storm throws them off course. They also saved the big bird..... I cannot talk too much detail. You have to watch this awesome movie!
Opinion:
After watching this movie, my eyes were full of tears. The movie touched my mind. I am so happy that the old man and young boy used their bravery and determination to have the journey. It is very difficult to overcome many things. The old man and the young boy learned a lot from each other. Also, I learned a lot of things from this movie. I knew that I have to work hard in my dream. Do not think it is too late to do. Everything can come true after doing. By the way, the 3D movie is really cool. I think I am in the movie instead of in front of the monitor. I like seeing movie!

Week 4: Task 1 - Saved by the Sun

I listen this video for 20 minutes.
Summary:
Global warming is more and more serious nowadays. We have to develop the clean energy. The solar power is a good one. The gas crisis happened in 1970 so that the solar power had been invented. The solar power is more expensive than fossil energy. There is a man who works in "National Renewable Energy Laboratory". He develop the solar power, moreover he knew the history of it. He had the first solar video. Solar panel has three parts. The top part is protecting. The middle part is the solar energy. The third part is base. Bill has two solar houses. He said that one half of the roof is dedicated to generating hot water, the other half is our electric power plant. On the other hand, they can save electricity and sent the surplus to other's home automatically. The roof has been "solarized." When you start from scratch, the architect can meld the various functions into the overall design. There are no shingles--actually, it's shingled in glass which covers the solar thermal panels and is part of the photovoltaic panels.
Opinion:I am interested in environment issue. We have the only earth. The solar power is an important technology. The hurricane attacked our place seriously. The sea level arises. He can we face those preambles and save them? After watching this video. I realized that the solar power is a good technology to reduce the CO2. Although there is little people use this, it is still a tendency in the future. I respect those sciences who worked hard in this field. Bill has a website which introduce the solar power.

Hello I am Patty
I am a student from Taiwan. Last September, I went to study in San Diego. It is a really beautiful place to live. I spent a lot of time to go to the beaches. That's the reason why I came to Seattle to work hard in my learning. I love the sunshine in San Diego. It is the best memories in my life. I like the school in Seattle. I learned a lot here than in San Diego. I want to finish the college then transfer to the university.
My mom is a businesswoman. She tells me a lot of things and support my dream to study abroad. It is a hard time to my family in this March cause we lost our dear father at that time. I do love my dad forever even if he is in heaven now. I have a older brother who had just graduated from SCCC and he is in Taiwan now. My younger brother is a cute boy who is in high school. I love my family.
